Brown acrylic paint, powder, real dirt, paper and sticks were used to form the half dried muddy base.  After everything is dried and fixed, I touched the glossy paint here and there to simulate the wet mud.  The helmet is cut to appropriate size and glued to the base prior to everything.  Because the paint basically holds everything in place,  90 % of dirt, bits & pieces can be secured on the base after finished

Just for fun, I also "dropped" several spent cartridges in the mud, I washed them with a mix of black and dark brown before glued them to the mud
